Hometown Hero Charles Barker has always been a good Samaritan. His philanthropy spans many avenues, but he has been a significant aid to the public school system. During the pandemic, he helped to build over 1,200 desks for students who had to attend school remotely. He built picnic tables for schools that needed more seating for social distancing when the schools did reopen. And lately, he’s been partnering with Overby-Sheppard Elementary on a variety of programs.

He reached out to Allen & Allen for support on some of the school’s newest initiatives, and the firm was happy to oblige. Last week, Allen & Allen President Jason Konvicka, along with attorney Courtney Winston visited the school to present a check for $1,000 on behalf of Allen & Allen Cares: Helping Our Heroes. At the school to greet them were Principal Spain, Assistant Principal Dr. Hester, and 6th District Councilwoman Ellen Robertson. Visitors got a tour of the school, and a run-down of some of the exciting improvements the staff has planned.

This includes:

  1. Two wellness rooms: One for students, and one for teachers
  2. Upgrades to the school’s playground equipment to make it safer for the students with more room for play
  3. Adding lights to the parking lot to increase security and safety for teachers

“What better time to invest in education than during the back-to-school season? This contribution will be a positive start for yet another successful year at Overby-Sheppard,” says Allen & Allen’s Jason Konvicka.
